How to give your dog new energy when it’s using it a lot? Try cans

A meat bomb in a form of a dog paté or can doesn’t have to be only a reward. If you are planning to go on a long hike – to the mountains or to the valley – you can make the use of a dog meat can. Dogs in move, usually when doing any sport outside, need enough liquids, proteins and energy. This is exactly what a dog gets from a quality can. You can give them to your dog for several days before the activity.

We tried that with our furry friend ourselves during this summer when we decided to explore our Czech hills. We haven’t taken our dog for a several days long hike in a long time so we were looking for something which would give it enough energy for the journey. A friend of ours recommended meat cans. We were hesitating for a while, also because of their weight but than we decided it’s worth a try and we will exercise a bit :).

It’s better to let a dog try the food in advance. We started to give the cans to our dog approximately a weak before the planned trip so we could stop giving them to our dog if a problem occurred. Mixing dry and wet food shouldn’t be a problem here. Canned meat, if the quality is good, also helps to improve the intake of food and to rehydrate. For us, meat cans proved themselves to be a good supplement to dry food.

In such case, it is important to decrease the portion of dry food and give your dog dry and wet food in the ratio 50:50. For mini breeds, the daily ration of the meat bomb should not exceed 100 grams, for medium breeds 400 grams and for giant breeds 600 grams. An average daily food ration for an adult dog is around 3600 kcal/kg of food. For dogs performing demanding activities, it is approximately 400 kcal/kg of food more. Exactly this difference should be supplemented to the dog by meat from cans.

In the end, we only used wet food instead of combining it with dry food during the weekend so we were able to finish the can. Our furry friend seemed to be full of energy all the time and also satisfied with the taste of the food. For us, this change was positive.

And how do you provide your dog with enough energy when it needs it?
