Pets at home and abroad in the view of statistics: New Zealanders keep the most pets

According to the data published at the end of last year, more than half of the people from around the world lives with at least one pet. The most numerous dog population is in the United States (70 million dogs), followed by Brazil (36 million) and China (27 million). Same as with dogs, we find the most cats in the United States (74 million) and China (53 million) only this time, the winning third includes Russia with nearly 18 million cats.

According to earlier statistics, most pet owners lives in Latin America, specifically Argentina, Mexico and Brazil, followed by Russia and the United States. And although it is clear that the exact figures on the number of pet owners or dog and cat populations can’t be established, even the estimates show that there are quite a number of dogs and cats and their around the world. And that this community continues to grow.

The most commonly kept pet is still a dog. It may surprise you, but the fastest growing canine population is in India. Brazil holds the first place in the largest number mini dogs per capita. The first place in breeding of large animals (over 70% of dogs) is in turn held by Saudi Arabia.

Cats are very popular pets, especially in Russia and France.

We will find the most balanced dog and cat population in Romania, where 45% of households own a dog and 45% have a cat. However, the most pets are kept by New Zealanders (almost ⅔ of households).

Same as to me, it may be a surprise to you, that dogs have come second immediately after fish, which you’ll find as pets most often in British households. They are said to be kept more often by men. In turn, women are said to keep dogs or cats more frequently.

In the Czech Republic dogs still win over cats. A dog is kept by less than a half of Czech households (an estimated 38%). Even in the Czech Republic, dogs are more often kept by women. The same is true for cats, which we find in almost one third of Czech families.

Over time, however, the claim that a dog is man's best friend has acquired completely different dimensions. I wrote about how the pet world turned into a profitable business in one of the previous articles. Now I’m just going to update it with a few numbers.

  • Americans spend over 50 billion dollars a year on their pets. They also love to spend on additional services, such as dog photographers.
  • It’s said that most is spent on pet food by the Norwegians - according to rough estimates it’s 629 dollars a year.
  • The least is spent on the nutrition of pets by the Vietnamese-

And what do you spend the most on when buying stuff for your pets?
