Cat-sitting

If you have a cat at home, you have certainly encountered the issue of who will take care of it at times. Especially now, at the time of holidays and departures for vacations. Relatives or friends are not always able to come over and to take the cat into a hotel or to someone to mind it can be very stressful for it. That’s why there is the option for the cats to be minded directly in your home.

My friend operates such service, so I have asked her for you, and also because I have a cat as well, how that actually works.

My cat is a very independent creature, not much disturbs her. It even managed moving without any visible stress. But the notion that it will find itself in a space that it doesn’t know for a week, without its scent trace, and even with alien people, doesn’t appeal to me at all and I think, that such situation would stress her a lot as well.

As you know for sure, cats are strongly fixed on the environment that they live in. They mark their territory with pheromones, they guard it and protect it from aliens (for example, from visitors with a dog), only at home they know, where their safe places are in a case that they would feel threatened. They just feel relaxed only within “their own space”, as well as self-conscious and at ease. So if you relocate a cat into alien environment, where it doesn’t smell its scent, or even worse, where it smells the scent of another cat, the self-consciousness and ease will be gone in no time and it will be replaced by stress and anxiety.

Anytime I went somewhere for a couple of days, the cat was taken care of by relatives or neighbours. However, this year, I am planning a longer holiday. That’s the reason why I have decided to use cat-sitting. Since even my friend provides these services, my decision making was clear.

However, if you are choosing from unknown minding services, it is clear, that you may have concerns. After all, the notion that you will allow a completely unknown person into your unguarded flat, can add wrinkles to your forehead. Therefore, it is a good idea to carefully read through the reviews for the cat-sitting service and not only on their website, but also to try to find also ratings on an impartial website. From what I have seen, if someone is unsatisfied with anyone, they will rarely leave it to themselves.

The person who will take care of your cat, should have long-term experience with cats. Ideally even at least basic veterinary knowledge and everything should be covered by an agreement. It suits me that I am not ordering it at some “company”, but from a specific person. I find it more personal and safer: if something is wrong, it is their fault directly.

And now, let us get to the process of cat-sitting itself. I will describe the approach of the minding service that I’ve chosen, which doesn’t always have to be universal.

Prior to the cat-sitting itself, there is an introductory visit, when you will introduce the minder to the cat. You will let them know about its nature, what it likes to play with, how it likes to spend its time the most, what it is afraid of, where it may and must not go, what to watch out for, what to feed it with, possibly, what kind of medicine it needs to get and the like. During the visit, an agreement will be also drawn up, the number of visits per day will be agreed upon, along with the handover of the keys and the payment for the services.

The visit takes about one hour and it includes every day feeding, refilling of fresh water, cleaning of cat litter boxes, cuddling and playing with the cat. You can agree on more activities and since every cat is different and requires also a different approach, individual conditions of care and extent of the services can be agreed upon.

I see this method as the best option of how to take care of the cat during the time of a vacation, if you don’t have anyone who would stay with the cat during the time of your absence or who could come daily. I see an advantage even in the fact, that with a year-long experience, the minder is ready for various situations that could surprise a relative or an acquaintance who don’t have a cat at home, and they could react in a wrong way.

How do you provide for your cat in the time of holiday? Have you ever tried minding services or does your furry friend leave together with you?
