Portraits of popular breeds both at home and abroad: The Syrian or golden hamster
The golden hamster, sometimes referred to as hamster-teddy bear because of its appearance, was first captured less than a century ago by zoologists in Syria. Hence also its second name – the Syrian hamster. Over time, it became a popular pet throughout the whole world.
People not only in the Czech Republic, but also abroad, have gotten to like it especially for its cute eyes. The eyes of the golden hamster resemble two small black-and-brown beads, which are complemented by its tiny pink nose. Anyone who ever had this kind of hamster knows that this look is hard to resist.
In addition to their friendly nature, their owners often point out their satin coat. A wide variety of colours and hair types in this species can be observed today mainly due to frequent family breeding. It’s typical particularly by its smoothness which is compared to satin.
Most golden hamsters are long-haired, which, among other things, means that they can’t take care of their fur and need your help. You can recognise good health not only from fine, but also very dense hair, including the area around the belly.
It’s typical for this hamster, same as, for example, for the “djungarian” and other kinds of tiny rodents, to have puffy cheeks – cheek pouches, where they like to store grains. They are capable of stuffing grains and seeds in the volume of half of their weight into their faces.
In adulthood, this kind of hamster grows up to 18 centimetres and its weight fluctuates around less than 200 grams. With its size, it rather belongs to larger kinds of hamsters. For example, the Roborovski hamster grows about to half the length.
Even so, the golden hamster is quite the minikin. It’s very well-suited also for children, although it requires careful handling. It’s very popular also because it’s the most tolerant and contact of all the hamster varieties. It’s advisable to get it for the children at the time when they reach eight years and understand what the care entails.
The average age of the golden hamster is somewhat lower, it usually lives up to two to three years. The highest recorded age of this “hamster teddy” is four years.
You should definitely know about this kind, that it’s a hamster loner. Golden hamsters, who grown up since childhood in larger numbers, tend to be of a more combative nature. Many breeders are of the opinion that if we want to avoid conflicts between them, we should rather separate them from each other, about at the 10th week of their life.
If you choose this breed, you certainly won't make a mistake. Note, however, that even this kind of hamster is usually the most active at night. And like his fellow tribesmen, it’s also is an avid nibbler of anything that gets under its teeth. For its and your safety, I recommend you to hide and secure the cords of various appliances and electronics well :).
