Feline Spring Fever

It is a well-known fact that cats love bright and warm spots, they like to relax on warm windowsills. Therefore, even though they are famous sleepyheads, they get new energy with the spring coming, they are more active, more sociable and more joyful. And mainly, they start to be more active with regard to romance.

The behaviour of cats changes in spring. The nature around awakens and so does your little beast. Suddenly, it is excited, full of new energy and seeks the company of other cats. Spring is really a season of love for cats, the period you may know as caterwauling, it often seems to be a period of sleepless nights for neighbours in the countryside (as their loving songs sound more like a brutal murder than a romantic thing). Well, the cat knows best that spring is the best time for kittens to grow up.

The time of caterwauling is not really pleasant for those who have a cat indoors. However, it is also not very pleasant for the furry friends as well if they are not neutered. They have their needs and instincts they can satisfy. Therefore, they are often nervous, stress and sometimes even aggressive. The last one mainly applies to male cats that are not neutered. You can often find them walking in front of a window, mainly if a female cat that caterwauls is around – they can feel the hormones she releases. And it is often accompanied by various noises, from subtle meowing to crazy screaming. Another unpleasant thing for the owner is urine marking.

Cats are cuddlier and some even so restless that they won’t even eat enough in this period. And then they are even louder. My cat, before she was sexually mature and I could have had her neutered, was like crazy. She didn’t stop meowing from early morning to late night, she bent over with every caressing and pushed her butt up and she was basically pushing.

Caterwauling is great stress and burden for the organism of indoor cats, therefore, it is good for them, and for their owner as well by the way, to have them neutered. However, everyone needs to consider its advantages and disadvantages himself/herself.

Neutering outdoor cats should go without saying and all owners should be responsible. There are enough cats without owners here and moreover, the intercourse may also come with a terminal illness besides the pleasure. Male cats often go for trips lasting up to several weeks or they don’t return at all. They can’t even avoid fights with other male cats when protecting their territory. And the fights can sometimes get really ugly. For female cats, being pregnant is often great burden and risk.

You also have to take greater care of your cat’s fur in this period, moulting might be extensive. Another issue is related to parasites that also awaken when the spring comes. It mainly concerns fleas and ticks. Don’t forget that these pests are already active now due to temperature changes. Therefore, protect your pets in advance.
