Simply put: much better, than us, humans. And cats even hear much better than dogs. But from experience, I can say, that it also depends on what and whom they want to listen to. How is it with dogs?
The possibilities of dog hearing change with the growing age as in case of humans. The older the dog is, the worse they can usually hear. In extreme case, some may lose their hearing almost completely in old age. However, in comparison with us, humans, dogs can hear much better. It is usually stated that at minimum, they can hear 2x – 3x better than us.
What does it mean in practice? For example, a silent sound, that the human ear is capable of hearing at the distance of 6 metres, the dog can hear even from the distance of 20 metres and more. That’s why, dogs that have the tendency to bark at incoming visitors, may sometimes start barking already when the visitor is only approaching your front door and we don’t see them, or hear them yet. A dog can even recognize according to the sounds of steps, whether a person known to them is coming to the house or someone unfamiliar.
The frequency range of dog hearing is also significantly wider than the human hearing. Dogs can usually hear sound with frequency of 40 Hz – 45 000 (sometimes, even 60 000 Hz is mentioned). For people, the maximum limit of audibility for the highest sound is usually said to be about 20 000 Hz. This means, that in comparison with people, dogs hear even such high sounds that our ear won’t notice. This is the principle of functioning of the well-known training high-frequency whistles. Their high pitched sound is even more audible to dogs for a longer distance to dogs than a human voice.
Moreover, in hearing, the dogs get help from their auricles which are movable and they direct the incoming sound waves into the ear canal.
And how do the cats hear?
Same as dogs, cats are able to turn their auricles using small muscles so that the sound penetrates their ear canals at the best angle possible. Cats even have much more of these small muscles around the auricle, and that’s why they are able to work with their ears with a much greater accuracy. Even in case of the upper audibility limit of sound frequencies, cats surpass dogs. It is said, that cats are able to hear even sounds with the frequency of 64 000 Hz.
Since it is easier for cats to decode the sound when they are not in motion, you can notice, that if they catch a sound that is interesting for them, they usually stop, and sometimes, it almost seems as if they’ve turned to stone.
And one more tidbit at the end: hereditary deafness often in dogs and cats goes along with white hair colour. In case of cats which are white and have one blue eye and the other yellow for instance, the ear that’s on the same side as the blue eye is frequently affected by deafness. This type of deafness is related to pigment cells called melanocytes. Since these are formed from the same base as the cells in the interior part of the ear. If melanocytes don’t function correctly, the result is white colour. Moreover, there’s an increased probability that even some cells precisely in the inner ear will develop incorrectly and as a result, the animal will be white … and deaf.
