Corn in dog food
Some places on the internet say that corn is just a cheap filler for dog food, or that it doesn't belong in a dog's bowl at all. But some high-quality dog food contains corn. So what's the truth about corn?
It sits with great difficulties. It also looks like it is very painful. It seems that any contact of the tail and ground causes great pain. As well as any touch when I try to find out what’s wrong with its tail. We came back from swimming where our dog was with us. And it swam, too. Of course. It was warm so we didn’t even think of drying it.

Even though it was warm, our furry friend got cold in its backside. As I later found out, some dog breeds are more prone to this than others. For example labradors and clearly also all crossbreeds. You can encounter that in both small and large breeds. It is set to be influenced by a number of factors – the dog’s overall condition is important but it also (especially) depends on environmental influences such as cold and wet. And it is also important how long the dog stays in these conditions.
The name indicates an inflammatory disease which usually occurs, as I’ve already mentioned, around the base of the tail. A tail is the most sensitive part of a dog’s body and therefore it is prone to get cold when spending more time in water or wet. It can happen on a spring or autumn walk when rain catches you or in winter when playing in snow. People often mistake tail inflammation for a fracture. Then they try to remember if anyone stepped on dog’s tail by mistake or if they should take it to a vet.
If you recognize the symptoms of this syndrome at the early stage, you don’t need to go to a vet, at least at first. The most visible symptom is the tail which is hanging down. A dog has troubles sitting down and it usually lies down straight away. Problems can occur during a walk – either when defecating or when meeting up and playing with other dogs. Dogs use their tails to communicate which is more difficult in this situation. And it also tires your dog and hurts. Your doggie might have an apathetic facial expression.
In this case, it is the best to have a relaxing regime. Make your walks as short as possible for a couple of days. Even though your dog is used to sleeping outside its bed on floor where it cools down in summer for example, try to keep it in warmer environment these days. You can also give it a blanket to its bed. And you should definitely completely avoid swimming in water before your dog’s tail fully heals up. Antibiotics and any other pills are not necessary – they can only be used when it doesn’t get better after a couple of days. It may take from several days up to a week before the inflammation subsides.
And how can you avoid the liber tail syndrome? Especially when your dog is anyhow related to labradors – but it can be generally applied to almost all dog breeds, even the more resilient ones – always properly dry it using towel. It doesn’t matter if it was raining or you got out of a pond. If you have a large dog and you know you would need at least two towels to dry it, at least dry it around the tail. And do not spend too much time in water. Especially when this syndrome occurs in your dog once, it could become chronic. Prevention is worth it in this case.
